Wet Paint - Lion of Judah
The following "Slide Show" depicts the six month creation process of the 1/6 Life-size "Lion of Judah"™ sculpture. This carving was used as the "maquette" model for the other sizes. This creation process began with a "concept" drawing, after which a 1/6 Life-size wire armature was constructed. Then, aluminum foil was crushed into the shape of the lion, and clay was added, which formed the final sculpture. In addition, a foam board was added to work on the overall composition. The foam board ultimately was replaced with a beautiful walnut and Italian marble base, which was then laser engraved with the "Ten Commandments," and the "New Commandment," the "Greatest Commandments" and the names of God. Next, the delicate clay sculpture was shipped to the Eagle Bronze Foundry in Lander, Wyoming. After the required three months of casting, the first Bronze 1/6 "Lion of Judah"™ was completed in October 2007.

Lion of Judah
Jesus Christ, the Mighty Warrior King!

The "Lion of Judah"™ composition symbolizes Jesus Christ, the Messiah of the Jews, the strong and fierce defender of God's chosen people. Throughout art history, Jesus Christ has been depicted as the gentle "Lamb of God", which He is. However, He is also the mighty "Lion of God", the warrior King who is returning soon to "judge and make war" on those who have rejected His love and hurt His children. (Revelation 19:11)

On January 4, 2006, the President of the Church of God denomination requested that Al Taylor, a national church leader, contact Max. Al asked the Artist if God had already "called" him to create a new sculpture featuring the Ten Commandments. Al and the denominations President felt that God had already spoken to Max in this regard. The artist confirmed that this was indeed true, but that God had not yet revealed what the new sculpture would look like. Hearing this, Al Taylor prayed for Max over the telephone, asking God to give Max a clear "vision" of the new composition.

Seven days later, on January 10, 2006, the Holy Spirit gave Max a clear "vision" of the "Lion of Judah"™ composition. This happened as the Artist/Designer walked and prayed across the newly acquired 23 acres of property, on Interstate 10 in Kerrville. This land had been given to The Coming King Foundation, for the first evangelical Sculpture Prayer Garden. At the time, Max, the foundation's President, was praying "in the spirit", seeking God for details regarding the Garden's design, and the new sculpture featuring the Ten Commandments. The composition God gave Max featured a magnificent, life-size male lion, and the Ten Commandments. In addition, God also showed Max that the various names of Jesus would also be inscribed around the sculpture's base, along with other key scriptures identifying Christ as God.

In the future, the Artist will be creating a full line of art, and art gifts, based on the "Lion of Judah"™ composition. However, like Max's six other divinely inspired art compositions, it will take many years before all of the various art pieces come into existence. This drawing was created by Max after he received a "vision" of the "Lion of Judah"™ composition as he prayed at the Kerrville Sculpture Prayer Garden site on 1/26/06
Max finished the original 1/6 Life-size clay sculpture at his Kerrville studio in mid-August of 2007.
Max believes God wanted him to create a sculpture of a mature male African lion, with a heavy dark mane. The largest lion known measured 12' in length and weighed 690 lbs. Average sized male lions measure 11' in length and weigh 550 lbs.
These two photos of the first 1/6 Life-size Bronze casting were taken in October of 2007 at the Eagle Bronze Foundry, shortly after the chemical patina was applied.
Once the patina process is finished, ithe Bronze casting is protected with a coat of paste wax and then attached to its base.
The finished 1/6 Life-size Bronze sculptures feature Walnut wood and Italian Marble bases, on turntables so they can be rotated.
The beautiful Walnut bases, made by Edson's Kerr Crafters, have been laser engraved with the names of God, "The Ten Commandments," "The Greatest Commandments," "The New Commandment" and other Scriptures. The laser engraving was done by Debbie Barron of ADCO, in Kerrville.
Max believes the Holy Spirit gave him the Scriptures and layout for the "Lion of Judah"™ bases. The Gospel is powerfully presented in just a few verses from the Old and New Testaments.

The names of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, are presented on the sides of the Sculpture Bass, along with major verses explaining the deity of Jesus.

The 1/6 Life-size sculptures feature a wooden box that carries the Commandments of God. The Ark of the Covenant was a wooden box that carried the original Ten Commandments given to Moses. Some have said that the "Lion of Judah"™ , is a "Ten Commandments" Monument with a attitude!
Shown here is Max with the 1/6 Life-size wax (forefront) and the 1/3 and 1/2 Life-size enlargements in EPS Foam. Instead of enlarging his sculptures the "old fashion way", this time Max enlisted the efforts of the Blue Genie art company, of Austin, TX.
The EPS Foam (Expanded Polystyrene) lion "mannequins" were created using a Laser Scanner and a CMC Router, which carved the soft foam. The process enlarges a sculpture, but cannot create undercuts, fine details , precise edges or texture.
The next step requires that Max sculpt the foam using heat tools, until the form is refined. Then, clay is added to the mannequin so that Max can create the final artistic details and textures.
This mock up shows the proportions
that the Life-sized Bronze "Lion of Judah"
TM will have.
Max also hopes to sculpt a 1 1/2 Life-sized version of this composition. The bronze lion would measure 4.5' x 16' x 9'.
This shows the proportions that a two times Life-sized Bronze monumental "Lion of Judah"TM . Which Max will be sculpting soon, as this is the size that will be featured in "The Coming King"® Sculpture Prayer Garden, that is being built in Kerrville, TX off of Interstate10.

The Lion, on the twice Life-sized bronze, would measure 6' x 21.5' x 12' tall.

In January of 2008 Max began carving the 1/3 Life-size "roughed out" EPS Foam with hand held heat tools to further refine the sculpture before adding the clay to the mannequin.
Next, the artist began carving the 1/2 Life-size foam Lion mannequin using a variety of heat tools, so that both the 1/3 and 1/2 Life-size foam sculptures were ready to receive their clay coating at the same time.
